African solutions to African problems — inspired by the legacy of George Ayittey.
The George Ayittey Society seeks to connect a growing group of African intellectuals who are committed to the exploration of the principles of human dignity and freedom and to foster a community of rigorous research, collaboration, and debate among its members.
To promote the principles of private property, freedom of exchange, restraints on power, and the rule of law and to ground those principles on the historical experiences of African peoples.
To encourage robust dialogue around the principles of freedom and human dignity and to support society members in developing rigorous research into how such principles can be applied to promote peace, liberty, and prosperity throughout Africa.
To maintain a long-term perspective, situate the ideas of liberty in African contexts, and promote a changing climate of ideas throughout the continent to realize Africa's potential. While discussion of current affairs and policy debates is important, we hope to consider them within a long-run approach to the intellectual, moral, and social renewal of Africa's traditions of liberty.
To engage a broad community of African intellectuals from various backgrounds and disciplines. We welcome people with intellectual or scholarly backgrounds in African studies, finance, economics, gender studies, history, law, media, trade, political science, philosophy, public administration, sociology, anthropology, and other disciplines relevant to achieving a social order based on individual liberty. GAS members seek to renew the deep intellectual, moral, and social foundations of liberty for all Africans.
Be part of a community shaping Africa’s future through ideas, debate, and bold reform.
